100 years ago: Arnold Bennett’s unbelief

THE latest “stunt” of the Daily Express is the publication of a series of articles by well-known novelists on “My Religion”. We propose next week to consider some of these articles in detail. The publication was preceded by a sensational advertisement in certain religious newspapers. It was offered to us, as it probably was to other Anglican and Roman Catholic journals, and, also probably, declined by them and by us for the same reason. The first Article, written by Mr. Arnold Bennett, was a crude expression of the cocksure unbelief familiar to the frequenters of Hyde Park on Sunday afternoons, and printed week by week these many years in such papers as the Freethinker. Mr. Bennett’s implied suggestion that to men of real intelligence denials of the fundamental assertions of the Christian religion are commonplaces would be insolent if it were not so characteristic of Mr. Bennett, a writer of great talent, with a genius for securing publicity. We regret very much that bishops should have thought it worth while to make the “stunt’’ the more effective by supplying the Daily Express with comments on such an article.
