It has been confirmed that 25 struggling areas of the UK will get a cash boost of up to £20m over the next decade. A total of 20 neighbourhoods in England will get the cash, as well as five across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The government is promising improvement in the “trailblazer neighbourhoods” but it is currently unclear how the money will be spent. The cash injection was confirmed by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in her Spending Review on Wednesday. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) will be involved in how the money is spent in a bid to “make sure that places that have been too easily left behind are no longer ignored”.
Walker North, in Newcastle, is one neighbourhood that is set to benefit from the money. As reported by Chronicle Live, long-serving councillor David Wood said he hoped the cash will help tackle fly-tipping and improve transport links.
He said: “I welcome any sort of investment into Walker, but it depends what strings are attached and whether the council can spend it wisely. The devil is always in the detail.”
Meawhile, Mary Glindon, MP for Newcastle upon Tyne East and Wallsend, said: “The Chancellor’s extra funding to help councils fight back against graffiti and fly tipping is very welcome and includes a neighbourhood in my constituency.
“Such eyesores degrade our public spaces and I’m very pleased that they will be tackled in the next phase of the Plan for Neighbourhoods.”
A government spokesperson added: “This investment will support communities to drive forward the changes they want to see in their neighbourhoods.
“It will support improvements people can see on their doorstep, champion local leadership, foster community engagement and strengthen social cohesion. “
