Governor Walz announced this morning that he will call a special session of the legislature to address “gun violence” with the usual Democrat nonsolutions, including an “assault weapons” ban. I don’t believe that there is such a thing as an “assault weapon,” but Democrats will insist there is. Would such a ban have done anything to prevent Robin Westman’s shooting spree at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis last week? It’s probably wrongthink to ask the question, but I doubt it.
I anticipated Walz’s maneuver in my Alpha News column on the statutory “conversion therapy” ban whose passage Walz and the Democrats celebrated in April 2023. The column actually sets forth a practical political suggestion for Republican state legislators who will turn out for the special session: Repeal the ban. Unlike an “assault weapons” ban, it might actually do something to prevent future mass shootings. If you know a Minnesota legislator, please pass it on.
