Why US Open final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner has been delayed

The US Open final clash between Carlos and Jannik Sinner has been delayed by half an hour.

Millions from around the world are poised to tune in for the clash, which is the third Grand Slam final this year involving the two men.

News of the delay was announced just over 25 minutes before the match was due to start.

It comes due to extra security checks in place, with fans subjected to prolonged searches due to the fact that US President Donald Trump will be attending the fixture.

Footage on Sky showed that thousands of fans were still making their way into the ground, with security working hard to make sure they get in in time.

US Open organisers said: “As a result of the security measures in place, and to ensure that fans have additional time to get to their seats, we have pushed the start time.”

Trump will be making his first visit to the US Open in a decade.

He is set to sit in the hospitality suite. His son-in-law, Jered Kushner, is also poised to attend.

Sunday’s showdown between Alcaraz and Sinner certainly has the makings of a classic.

Alcaraz overcame the Italian to win the French Open in June, in a thrilling contest that lasted five hours and 29 minutes.

Sinner, however, then proceeded to get his revenge.

The world No 1 powered his way to a four-set victory over Alcaraz in July’s Wimbledon final, with Sinner securing his first major on grass in the process.
