Is it time to stop giving Pope Leo the benefit of the doubt?

(LifeSiteNews) — On this week’s episode of Faith and Reason, John-Henry Westen, Father Charles Murr, and Frank Wright discuss Pope Leo’s audience with Father James Martin, in which the pontiff apparently declared that he would continue to welcome “LGBTQ Catholics” as Pope Francis did.

They also discuss the ongoing LGBT Jubilee Year pilgrimage at the Vatican, a Mexican bishop “concelebrating” a Mass with a lesbian Anglican in a homosexual “marriage” who was then allowed to receive the Eucharist, the cardinal of Madrid telling a heterodox LGBT conference that the Church must promote the “inclusion” of homosexuals, and more.

The panel opened the episode by discussing the ongoing pro-LGBT jubilee pilgrimage at the Vatican, organized by the heterodox Italian LGBT group “La Tenda di Gionata” (“The Tent of Jonathan”), which has claimed that Scripture does not condemn homosexual relationships, and joined by Fr. James Martin’s dissident organization Outreach. Interestingly, the pilgrimage has been listed on the Vatican’s website, while a reference to the Society of Saint Pius X’s (SSPX) recent jubilee pilgrimage was removed.

Westen noted how stunning it is that the SSPX’s pilgrimage was scrubbed from the Vatican website while this heretical organization’s pilgrimage is promoted.

“So here is a Latin Mass, beautiful pilgrimage, scrubbed from the website, and now this pilgrimage, the ‘LGBTQ+,’ whatever they are, activists, are processing through the Holy Door, and they are allowed on the website,” the host said. “It means something when you’re on the (Vatican) website.”

Murr emphasized that it appears someone in the Vatican must have an agenda to allow this LGBT pilgrimage while removing any mention of the traditional SSPX pilgrimage.

“What’s wrong with this picture? An awful lot. It almost sounds like somebody has an agenda, doesn’t it?” the priest pondered. “Somebody who’s in charge has an agenda. … That’s very unfortunate. Maybe the Holy Father should look into that, too, in clarity and transparency.”

Wright stressed that this pilgrimage is ultimately the result of modernism, the replacement of God with the desires of the self, which as highlighted by Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical De Erroribus Modernis (On Modernist Errors), has been a key error used to wage a war against the Church by her enemies for centuries.

“(De Erroribus Modernis) talks to you about the fact that there’s been a war on the Church for 400 years, and that the enemies of the Church have always sought to destroy the Church,” he said. “And one of (those errors used in this war) is the error of modernism, where modern man was beginning to place his own desires at the center of his own little world.”

“Over 100 years ago, Pope Leo XIII warned, rather presciently, of what the result of this would be,” he added. “And I think we can see that today, proceeding through the Holy Door at the Vatican.”

The panel then turned to more disturbing news from the Vatican, where just days before the LGBT pilgrimage began, Fr. Martin had a private audience with Pope Leo. Following that meeting, the Jesuit priest wrote on social media that the “message” he took from the meeting “was that Pope Leo will be continuing with the same openness that Francis showed to LGBTQ Catholics.”

Westen reminded listeners that Martin had previously protested the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to allow parents to opt their children out of reading graphic books that promote homosexuality, “blessed” a same-sex “couple” publicly as soon as Pope Francis promulgated Fiducia Supplicans, among other scandals.

“I’m sorry, from a Catholic perspective, it’s disgusting. It is what leads people to hell, to encourage people in a lifestyle, in a behavior, that will literally lead them to hell,” he said.

The host underscored that Pope Leo, like Pope Francis, seems to be endorsing Martin’s heterodoxy and has crossed a line.

Murr agreed and emphasized that Pope Leo knows perfectly well how Martin is undermining the faith, yet hasn’t reprimanded him. After this meeting, it’s time to stop giving the Holy Father the benefit of the doubt.

“I’m not going to make the same mistake I made the first time with Pope Francis,” the priest said. “I gave Pope Francis the benefit of the doubt. I said, ‘There are certain things that I don’t understand … going on and I’m sure that the pope has the Church in mind, because he represents the Church.’”

“I gave Pope Francis the benefit of the doubt. … And I saw that crushed, demolished, it came to naught. I’m not willing to do that now,” he added.

Murr further stressed Martin’s account of the meeting and how the Vatican has notably not issued a correction.

“Right after that audience took place, Fr. Martin met with the press and gave … an account of what happened during the meeting, and it was all very positive,” he said.

“Of course he’s not going to represent anything negative. If that were not the truth, immediately, the Vatican, or the pope himself, should have said, ‘No, that is not what happened,’” he added. “But they didn’t correct that, so we have to assume that Father Martin’s account of that encounter with the Holy Father was the way he’s reporting it.”

Wright echoed these sentiments and highlighted how tragic it is for the new pontiff to endorse Martin’s pro-LGBT ministry, which is leading countless souls to hell.

“This (ministry) is not going to lead souls to salvation. It’s not about what you or I prefer to see or think; this is about the teachings of the Church and what God says you have to do to avoid damnation,” the journalist said. “This is … not just a dereliction of duty, as you would see in say something like the army. This is damning people to hell, by example. This is a tragic thing to see from the Holy See. … It’s heartbreaking.”
