When you live in a blue city, you have to work with the hand you’re dealt as far as elected officials go, and while I pray that the issue of repeat offenders finally gets addressed in a meaningful way in the aftermath of this tragedy, I’m not optimistic, because people will say a lot of things when they want your vote, yet when it comes time to do the actual work, they revert right back to business as usual.

White House What’s Up
On Tuesday afternoon, President Donald Trump will participate in a swearing-in ceremony for the United States Ambassador to the Portuguese Republic, John Arrigo. After that, he’ll sign a proclamation.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will hold a press briefing at 1:00 PM Eastern.

The courts were insanely busy on Monday — or…I was insanely busy trying to keep up with all of the decisions of note. Here’s a sampling:
That last one from SCOTUS (regarding the removal of an FTC commissioner) involved an administrative stay, so it is only temporary. We can expect a ruling on the application for stay pending appeal before too long, as well.
Additionally, the Ryan Routh trial started yesterday in Florida. Bob Hoge brought us up to speed on some of the weirdness with that:

COMING ATTRACTIONS
We could see procedural votes as early as Thursday to change the Senate rules regarding confirmation of President Trump’s nominees. Assuming the rules change passes, the first tranche of nominees would then be pushed through next week.
President Trump travels to the U.K. next week as well.
MORNING MUSING
That President Trump was able to nominate (and confirm) three justices to the Supreme Court during his first term — especially given the headwinds he faced — is borderline miraculous. Since they’ve joined the court, I’ve had my share of disagreements and raised eyebrows as to Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, but overall, I’ve been pleased with their tenure and jurisprudence thus far.
Certainly, I would contend that having the three of them in addition to Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito — and even Chief Justice John Roberts (who’s, in my view, too invested in preserving the institution, so that he sometimes misses the forest for the trees) — has been a net positive for the court (and the country).
But I’ve noticed an uptick recently in the Trump justices speaking out a bit more about the role of the judiciary. Yes, Coney Barrett has a book coming out, so that likely explains some of it, but I mean primarily in their written opinions. We had another example on Monday from Kavanaugh in the concurrence he offered up on the case involving immigration stops in L.A. And Gorsuch notably rapped the lower courts on the nose in the recent decision regarding NIH funding.
It feels a bit like the Trump justices are coming into their own — and perhaps recognizing that it isn’t solely up to the Chief Justice (or the more senior justices) to herd the lower courts and remind them of the proper role of the judiciary. I like it.
