As the nation roils in the aftermath of the horrific assassination of conservative icon and TPUSA co-founder Charlie Kirk, President Trump spoke movingly Wednesday night and talked about Kirk’s legacy, his beautiful family, his faith, and more during a four-plus-minute address from the Oval Office.
As many of us in conservative media—and doubtless many of you out there—struggle with our emotions, the president agreed that it was a moment that will live in infamy:
To my great fellow Americans, I am filled with grief and anger at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk on a college campus in Utah. Charlie inspired millions, and, tonight, all who knew him and loved him, are united in shock and horror. Charlie was a patriot who devoted his life to the cause of open debate and the country that he loved so much in the United States of America.

“I ask all Americans to commit themselves to the American values for which Charlie Kirk lived & died. The values of free speech, citizenship, the rule of law & the patriotic devotion & love of God.” https://t.co/FeKSK5pfLi

Charlie Kirk was a fighter, the president said—a fighter for the dream that is America. Trump talked about how faith is so important during these trying times:
He fought for liberty, democracy, justice, and the American people. He’s a martyr for truth and freedom, and there’s never been anyone who was so respected by youth. Charlie was also a man of deep, deep faith, and we take comfort in the knowledge that he is now at peace with God and heaven.
The nation is praying for Charlie and his family, the president said:
Our prayers are with his wife, Erica, the two young, beloved children, and his entire family, who he loved more than anything in the world. We asked God to watch over them in this terrible hour of heartache and pain.

Although Trump acknowledged that this was indeed a dark day, he ended with a message of hope and resilience:
An assassin tried to silence him with a bullet, but he failed, because together, we will ensure that his voice, his message, and his legacy will live on for countless generations succumb. Today, because of this heinous act, Charlie’s voice has become bigger and grander than ever before, and it’s not even close.
May God bless his memory, May God watch over his family, and may God bless the United States of America. Thank you.
This is one of those moments that will live on for decades, if not centuries. I am too young to remember JFK and RFK, but I do know that their assassinations shaped my parents’ lives and the country for generations that followed.
This feels to me like one of those seminal, historical moments, and where it will lead, nobody knows. Trump’s address, though, was what was needed on a dark night, indeed.
God Bless the late Charlie Kirk and his family, and God Bless the United States of America.
