Canadian elites’ appalling celebration of Charlie Kirk’s murder shows how much they hate conservatives

(LifeSiteNews) — Over the past five days, conservative Canadians have gotten a revealing glimpse of how our taxpayer-funded media sees us – and it is truly ugly.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk has sparked an unprecedented outpouring of grief around the world. Kirk’s videos had billions of views across every social media platform; even those who did not know him could recognize him by sight. His cheerful campus debates were a staple of the Gen Z internet diet.

But for much of the Canadian press, his ordinary, common-sense views mean that he is a “far-right extremist.” Kirk was anything but, unless you consider believing that there are two genders, being pro-life, and holding a laundry list of run-of-the-mill conservative views is “extremist.” Much of Canada’s progressive establishment, as it turns out, does.

French CBC Radio referred to Kirk as “far-right” and smeared him as a “racist.” Rather than highlighting the wave of celebration that met Kirk’s killing from the Left – including Canadian progressives – CTV warned about “right-wing anger” and “vengeance.” Several MPs blasted Canada’s state broadcaster, the CBC, over its coverage of the assassination; the day of Kirk’s death, the outlet published a laundry list of his most “controversial takes,” prominently including his “anti-abortion” views.

Another government-funded media outlet, Cult, ran the headline “To Hell With Charlie Kirk” and stated: “Charlie Kirk died as he lived: propagating hateful myths about marginalized groups in our society.” A repulsive CBC “hate expert,” Barbara Perry, claimed that Kirk called for LGBT-identifying people to be executed (writer Stephen King has already apologized for making the same claim). Erica Ifill of the Hill Times called Kirk a “rectal stain on society.” A Toronto elementary school teacher showed small children a video of Kirk’s killing and said he deserved it.

Then, of course, there are all the teachers, social workers, and professors who rejoiced in Charlie Kirk’s public execution. A University of Victoria professor, Melia Belli Bose, declared “GOOD RIDDANCE” and rejoiced that the Left had finally “sent someone with good aim.” University of Calgary associate professor Tawab Hlimi posted a bullseye graphic. University of Toronto religion professor Ruth Marshall upped the ante by saying that “shooting is too good for you fascist c***s.”

Marshall, of course, is talking not just about Kirk – she’s talking about millions of Canadians who hold similar views. She’s talking about the millions of Canadians who are pro-life. She’s talking about the millions of Canadians who happen to still believe, like all of the Canadians who went before them, that there are two sexes. She’s talking about you, and she’s talking about me. Before Kirk’s body was even cold, many Canadian elites could not wait to send us a message: We’re glad he’s dead. We wish you were, too.

I work in the pro-life movement, and so part of me was not surprised by all this. One of the great ironies of being a pro-lifer in Canada is that all of the violence, grotesque language, threats, and vile behavior come from the pro-abortion side – but progressives insist that it is the other way around. They warn about “far-right Christians” when it is Christian churches that are being burned down and vandalized year after year. Violence in Canada comes from the Left, but if you read the press, you’ll get precisely the opposite picture.

But there is something different knowing that these journalists, professors, teachers, and others saw an incredibly graphic video of a young father getting shot in the neck and collapsing as blood gushed from the wound, and that their first reaction was gleebecause he believed and said the very things that we believe and say. There is something jarring about knowing that if this happened to a Canadian pastor, or pro-life activist, or parental rights advocate, they would also rejoice. They are filled with hate, and they fill our institutions.

Across Canada this weekend, there were vigils for Charlie Kirk. There were also reports that many churches across the country were packed. While Canada’s progressives vented their lethal hatreds, those who appreciated Kirk’s message mourned, and many decide to go to worship services. Over the past five days, the Canadian establishment let their mask slip. We should not forget what we saw, and we should not let them forget it, either.
