(LifeSiteNews) – A pro-abortion student group at the University of Washington withdrew plans to host an activity involving shooting Nerf guns at pictures of politicians after word of the “tone-deaf” event drew public outcry.
The College Fix reported that Seattle Green Wave, which raises money for pro-abortion causes and advocates a “Constitutional Amendment to protect women’s health and the freedom to do with their bodies as they please,” had advertised a “carnival” event where attendees could “shoot nerf guns at dart boards of political figures, compete in a water balloon toss, paint tote bags or flowerpots and enjoy a red bull Italian Soda with a local reproductive justice group.”
Many found the event to be in especially poor taste so soon after the September 10 murder of Turning Point USA head Charlie Kirk by a left-wing sniper at Utah Valley University who deemed Kirk “hateful.”
“While Nerf guns are toys, the imagery of shooting at politicians should strike everyone as dangerously tone-deaf at a time when the country is still processing the assassination of a high-profile conservative leader,” Seattle conservative talk host Jason Rantz wrote. “This episode reflects a broader trend on college campuses where progressive groups normalize hostility toward political adversaries. While organizers may have intended the game as satire, context matters — and joking about political violence just days after Kirk’s murder, and the day following his memorial, was bound to generate outrage.”
A university spokesperson later issued a statement that the “planned activity certainly did not represent the values of the UW & the student group organizing that activity recognized it was inappropriate & decided not to do it even before University staff contacted them.” The event description was changed and no Nerf guns were brought. “The UW is committed to discussion & debate that is constructive, and the University opposes violence or allusions to violence,” the university said.
The murder of a prominent conservative by a deranged leftist seems to have done little to dissuade other leftists from expressing hateful and violent tendencies. Various social media users openly mocked and celebrated the killing, an alarming number of whom held jobs in education. In the U.S. House of Representatives, 118 Democrats declined to support a resolution of remembrance for Kirk.
