Boston BLM Linked ‘Social Activist’ Cops to Big Fraud Charges – RedState

Remember the summer of 2020? The BLM/Antifa riots, resulting from the death during arrest of a career criminal, armed robber, and drug dealer, in which billions of dollars of property went up in flames?

Plenty of “social activists” arose from that incident, millions of dollars were raised, and it’s still not clear where all that money went. But in Boston, we now know where at least some of it went, and the person who squandered it has just pleaded guilty to fraud charges.

A once-celebrated Boston social activist has pleaded guilty to defrauding donors — including Black Lives Matter — out of thousands of dollars that she used as a personal piggy bank.

Monica Cannon-Grant, 44, pleaded guilty Monday to 18 counts of fraud-related crimes that she committed with her late husband while operating their Violence in Boston (VIB) activists group, according to the US Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts.

The activist scammed money — including $3,000 from a BLM group — while claiming it was to help feed children and run protests like one in 2020 over the murder of George Floyd and police violence.

None of that was true, of course. What Monica Cannon-Grant spent that money on was much more personal.

Cannon-Grant also conned her way into getting $100,000 in federal pandemic-related unemployment benefits — which she used to pay off her personal auto loan and car insurance policy.

But she has now confessed to transferring funds to personal bank accounts to pay for rent, shopping sprees, delivery meals, visits to a nail salon — and even a summer vacation to Maryland.

She “repeatedly scammed multiple public financial programs and stole money donated by members of the public who believed their donations would aid in reducing violence and promote social awareness,” said United States Attorney Leah B. Foley.

“Instead, Cannon-Grant used donations to satisfy her own greed, while falsely portraying herself as a legitimate nonprofit organizer. She betrayed the trust of everyone who donated and the public who supported her fraudulent charity,” she added.

That’s not just a fraud. That’s a nasty, selfish, and vicious fraud.

In any society built on charity and trust, these kinds of things shouldn’t happen. Cannon-Grant has now admitted to defrauding her donors to the tune of thousands of dollars, and I guess we can give her some small amount of credit for confessing her guilt – after she was caught. She would have done better to have had an attack of conscience and admit her crimes before she was caught or, better yet, to have been honest with her donors in the first place.

She didn’t, which speaks volumes about her character.

People donate to charities, for the most part, donate their hard-earned money because they are expecting to help their fellow people, to make a difference in someone’s life, and to help people who need help. That makes this a particularly sleazy and cynical kind of fraud; taking money for people in the name of a cause when the donee intends to use the cash to augment their personal lifestyle.

Of course, this money was donated to fund a movement that roused a rabble who looted and burned businesses, so our sympathy for these donors is tempered somewhat. But fraud is still fraud, and now Cannon-Grant is learning this the hard way.
