Kamala Harris, I suppose in order to promote her book, has repeatedly claimed that the 2024 presidential election was the closest of the 21st century. For example:

Harris’s assertion is, as Rita Panahi says, false. There have been seven presidential elections in the 21st century. Trump defeated Harris last year by 312-226. That is the third most decisive of the seven elections.
I suppose Harris was referring to the irrelevant “popular vote,” but her claim isn’t true there, either. By far the closest of the seven elections in terms of popular vote was 2000, where the margin was only around 500,000 votes. By that yardstick, the 2024 election was a distant second, with Trump’s margin over Harris being around 2,300,000 votes.
Why does Harris bother to keep repeating her false claim about the “closest election of the century”? I don’t know. Maybe she thinks it will help to sell books. The crowd reaction in the video above is interesting, too. It doesn’t sound as though most in the audience understand that Harris is making up the claim they are cheering. I suppose you could consider that emblematic of the current state of our politics.
