Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre holds back tears while talking about Charlie Kirk

(LifeSiteNews) – Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, was visibly moved to tears while speaking about how the assassination of Charlie Kirk affected him personally.

Speaking as a guest on a recent episode of Northern Perspective (starts at 17-minute mark), Poilievre was asked by the hosts to give his honest thoughts about Kirk’s death. He gave an honest and candid assessment of the state of politics in the United States and Canada today.

“Our thoughts are with the incredible family of Charlie Kirk, and our condolences to them. He was winning a lot of debates, and I think the authoritarian left was frustrated that they couldn’t win the argument, and ultimately, they ended the argument, and that’s often what they do,” he said.

Poilievre observed that the “censorship ideology on today’s left can’t tolerate any kind of disagreement,” and that is why Kirk paid the ultimate price. He noted how he was moved after Kirk’s wife, Erika, was able to forgive the alleged shooter.

“Kirk’s followers have been very peaceful, no riots, inspiring to see the peaceful response,” he said.

“To see his wife forgive the shooter, unbelievable, I don’t think I could have done that.”

Poilievre also noted how today, he has had death threats targeting him, his wife, saying, “We see more and more of the radical left trying to drive their opponents out of political life.”

“We can’t run away” or “hide,” and doing the opposite would “reward” the “violent” behavior that led to Kirk’s death, he noted.

Poilievre was one of the first Canadian political figures to speak out after Kirk was killed in September. He said Kirk was “mercilessly assassinated” for simply expressing his “contrary views.”

As reported by LifeSiteNews, Kirk, who was the CEO of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), was shot in the neck during an event on the campus of Utah Valley University on September 10.

This week, Kirk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom at White House by President Donald Trump.
