Over 3,000 join Eucharistic procession through the streets of New York

(LifeSiteNews) — A massive Eucharistic procession in downtown Manhattan drew looks from curious onlookers Tuesday afternoon.

Videos posted to social media this week captured the impressive event, which included more than 3,000 Catholics, according to reports.

Sponsored by the Napa Institute in partnership with the Archdiocese of New York, the sixth annual procession was part of the U.S. Church’s larger National Eucharistic Revival initiative.

The Napa Institute is a California-based Catholic non-profit that seeks to help clergy as well as professionals to grow in their faith and assist them in bringing Catholicism into the public square.

The day’s activities began at 3 p.m. with a meditation by Cardinal Giorgio Marengo and Fr. Ambrose Criste at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. Marengo is the Apostolic Prefect of Ulaanbaatar, which covers the country of Mongolia. Criste is a Norbertine priest stationed in Orange County, California. A 4 p.m. Mass was led by retired Boston Archbishop Cardinal Seán O’Malley.

A procession past Radio City Music Hall and Fox News’ New York City headquarters ensued, culminating with a visit to Times Square. Members of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal sang songs during the procession. Benediction with New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan followed at St. Patrick’s.

Among those in attendance were The Chosen actor Jonathan Roumie. He spoke at the event, urging Catholics to attend Mass daily while calling on non-Catholics to convert so they could receive the Eucharist as well.

“By seeking the healing of the deep wounds of sin within myself through the sacrament of reconciliation, receiving the Eucharist almost daily, it was Christ who then took over and further fashioned my soul to reflect more of Him within me,” he said.

Roumie met with Pope Leo XIV this past summer while at the Vatican after one of his general audiences.

Nuns, school groups, and others attended the procession.

“Jesus is present in the Eucharist, and we wanted to share that with the people of New York,” a resident of Long Island told The Tablet. “We wanted to share our faith today, and hopefully, inspire others.”

A study conducted by the Catholic University of America found that American Catholic priests from younger generations are more theologically orthodox than their older counterparts. The report, which garnered responses from approximately 40% of U.S. priests, discovers that younger priests are less interested in liberal social politics like LGBT issues and “climate change” than older priests.

Among those ordained in 2000 or later, about 40% said access to the Traditional Latin Mass should be a priority. Priests ordained before 1980 placed a higher emphasis on “social justice” and “synodality” than they did on “Eucharist devotion.” By contrast, 88% of priests ordained since 2000 said Eucharistic devotion should be a priority.
