‘Three killed and dozens wounded’ as strikes test ceasefire

At least three people were killed and dozens of others were injured as Israel carried out strikes in southern Gaza, Gaza’s civil defence said.

Israeli planes launched strikes on Gaza City after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the terrorist organisation Hamas of violating a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory.

He ordered the Israeli military to carry out “powerful attacks”.

The strikes were targeted at the Sabra neighbourhood on Tuesday.

Israel accused Hamas of carrying out an attack against the IDF in an area that is under Israeli control.

An Israeli military official said: “This is yet another blatant violation of the ceasefire.”

A spokesman for Hamas’s Civil Defence told the BBC that a series of Israeli airstrikes had hit homes, the courtyard of al-Shifa Hospital, and several other areas in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.

The US-backed ceasefire agreement went into effect on October 10, halting two years of war that was triggered by deadly Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

World leaders, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, flew to Egypt for the submit, where they were greeted by Donald Trump.

Both sides have since accused each other of ceasefire violations.

Earlier on Tuesday, Israeli media reported an exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

The terrorist organisation said in a statement that it remained committed to the ceasefire deal in Gaza and denied responsibility for an attack on Israeli forces in Rafah.
