It took all of about three minutes for Kat Abughazaleh, a 26-year-old progressive social media influencer running to represent the 9th Congressional District in Illinois, to stomp away from an interview where she was asked about a recent federal indictment.
Abughazaleh, during an exchange with Independent Reporter Tara Palmeri streamed on Thursday, was asked about the “really serious” charges she is currently facing.
The Democrat candidate has been charged with two counts: Conspiracy to impede or injure an Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, and assaulting or impeding that officer while engaged in his official duties. The charges are a result of her alleged actions during a protest last month at the Broadview ICE facility just outside of Chicago.
After giving Abughazaleh a flowery introduction, Palmeri dives into the most recent news roughly 40 seconds into the interview. Abughazaleh then bid her questioner adieu roughly at the 3:40 mark.
180 seconds. Kat, a social media darling who had actually posted videos of her actions at the protest online to garner attention, could only sustain 180 seconds of hard-hitting questions on the matter.
Abughazaleh better hope she doesn’t have to face a grilling on the stand in her defense.

Palmeri is correct. The charges are rather serious. Abughazaleh is in the “find out” portion of the “fool around and find out” cycle.
According to an MSNBC report, the conspiracy count carries the potential for a six-year prison sentence if convicted, while the assault charge could lead to an eight-year sentence.
Abughazaleh and five other defendants are accused of banging “aggressively” on a government vehicle, etching the word “PIG” into the body of the car, and breaking a side mirror and wiper. Not to mention the not-so-minor offense of impeding a government operation, which, had it happened on January 6, 2021, would have been grounds for perpetual imprisonment.
Some of the hard-hitting questions thrown out by Palmeri include: “How are you feeling right now? What’s going on through your head?”
Actually, come to think of it, trying to figure out what’s going on inside Abughazaleh’s head at any given moment is likely a challenge, even for her.
To her credit, Palmeri did flat-out question Abughazaleh on whether she had etched the word “pig” into the vehicle. Kat evaded the topic like a resident of Pamplona trying to outrun the bulls.
“I’m not speaking to the specifics of anything that’s in the indictment right now,” she replied. “But like I said, I do plan on pleading not guilty, and the evidence, uh, will come out in court.”

By the end of the interview, Palmeri again wondered what she was thinking in the video in which she blocked the ICE vehicle.
“Uh, you know, Tara, once again, this is my first time being federally indicted,” Abughazaleh replied. “Like I said, I plan on pleading not guilty. The evidence will come out in court, and I plan on winning.”
“Thank you so much for having me,” she concluded the festivities.
Palmeri, unaware her guest had quit, continued asking questions before it dawned on her.
“Did she just sign off? Did she just leave the chat? I’m so confused,” the host said. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what just happened. Um, okay. Well, she left because I asked her questions about what happened that day.”
Yep, she did. How is she supposed to handle the stresses of serving in Congress if she can’t last three minutes talking about her own actions?

Abughazaleh’s silliness was reminiscent of California gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter, who recently imploded during an interview with a state CBS News affiliate.
Again, fundamental questions. Again, a proverbial stomping of the feet as she backs away from the interview.
“I don’t want to keep doing this. I’m going to call it,” Porter said before berating the reporter.

At least Abughazaleh was slightly less dramatic with her departure.
Despite not wanting to speak about her indictment in depth with Palmeri, the social media star posted a video to X, declaring her innocence while claiming she is the victim of “political prosecution” from a Department of Justice (DOJ) engaged in a “gross attempt to silence dissent, a right protected under the First Amendment.”
Weird, one has to wonder if she felt the same way when President Trump was indicted for questioning an election.
“I’m not backing down, and we’re going to win,” Abughazaleh wrote on X.
Twenty-four hours later, she had backed down from an interview discussing the charges.
