Is Iran the Lurking Presence Behind American Campus Protests? – RedState

International diplomacy often consists of the fine art of saying “Nice doggy, nice doggy” until you can find a rock. Iran has been shown the rock a few times in recent months, but if a recent report out of New York’s Syracuse University is true, the Islamic Republic may be earning itself another whack on the snout. Speaking on a panel in St. Louis on Tuesday, the chancellor of that university stated that Iran may well be aiding and abetting the pro-Hamas, anti-Israel protests on college campuses in the United States.

That wouldn’t really come as any surprise.

The chancellor of Syracuse University revealed his belief that pro-Hamas, anti-Israel protests were encouraged and potentially orchestrated by Iran while speaking on a panel this week in Washington, D.C.

Chancellor Kent Syverud spoke on a panel Tuesday alongside the chancellors from Vanderbilt and Washington University in St. Louis and described the protest activity that took place on his college campus as well as other universities across the country.

“When things happened that I really believe were encouraged from Iran,” Syverud explained to the audience. “[The protests] did not have the involvement of very many, if any, of our own students.”

Representatives from two other universities agreed with Chancellor Syverud’s assessment:

Chancellor Daniel Diermeier of Vanderbilt, in Nashville, also pointed out clear coordination and the “playbook” for protests were backed by “organized networks” that could have motivated or directed students and agitators to demonstrate and disrupt campus.

“[Students] were looking at [and] were using the playbook that they had seen at Columbia and other places, and it was the same messaging. It’s more than social contagion,” Diermeier explained. “I think there are organized networks as well. And for sure we saw that.”

Washington University Chancellor Andrew D. Martin nodded in agreement.

At this point, mind you, this is speculation on the part of these university officials – but one would think they would have a pretty decent idea as to what is happening on their own campuses.

The “outside agitators” angle has been known about for some time. Iran’s involvement wouldn’t come as any shock. The mullahs aren’t strong enough to take on the United States directly; even those barbarians know that such an attempt would end badly for them. No, Iran is more likely to work behind the scenes, as they have done in the Middle East since 1979. In the Middle East, they supply weapons and ammunition, general logistics, and training; there’s very little doubt they could supply training to home-grown or immigrant agitators here.

We know Iranian nationals are in the country illegally. We know they came in, in large part, during the Biden administration’s non-enforcement of the border and immigration laws. What we don’t know is how many of them are here now, and what they may be up to.

New York’s Columbia University has been a hotspot of anti-Israel protests. Hundreds of protestors – rioters – have been arrested. Dozens of students have been expelled. While that’s all to the good, if these college officials are correct, if Iran is behind these riots, the vandalism, the occupation of college buildings, and yes, the attacks on Jewish students, then it may be time to show Iran the rock again.
