We saw during the 2024 campaign that President Donald Trump wasn’t afraid of going on any outlet to campaign, no matter how hostile. But it’s still a little surprising that he would now give an interview to CBS News’ 60 Minutes, the show that infamously edited their interview with Kamala Harris just before that election to make her sound more coherent.
Trump sued CBS over the interview, and the parties settled for $16 million.
But it’s a new day at CBS News, with Bari Weiss having taken the helm. Trump was interviewed by Norah O’Donnell for 60 Minutes on Friday at his Mar-a-Lago estate; the full interview airs Sunday night, but clips are already available.
It will be good to watch the full interview to see if there has been any change or effort to be more fair since Weiss took over. The fact that they have him on at all may show a change in approach.
According to CBS, O’Donnell’s conversation with the president spanned a wide range of topics, including his recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, US relations with Venezuela and Israel, the ongoing government shutdown and the administration’s new immigration and National Guard policies.
But based on the two preview clips released so far, I didn’t see a lot of difference yet.
“What are you doing as president to end the shutdown?” Norah O’Donnell asks.

But it’s not on Trump to end the shutdown; it’s on the Senate Democrats. They’re the ones voting against opening the government. A better question might be, “Can you do anything to convince the Democrats to come off their intransigent stand?” But that might be a little too much truth for CBS to handle in one question yet.
O’Donnell also asked about the “flash point” with China over Taiwan. Would you order U.S. forces to defend Taiwan if China attacked, she asked. Now, of course, Trump isn’t going to tell her anything on that; he’s not going to reveal what military reactions he would take or not take. So it’s a bit of a silly question, and he let her know that.
President Donald Trump says Taiwan “never even came up” when he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his trip to Asia last week.

Trump said that China understands what would happen if they did that, and he would not reveal any “secrets.” Translation: China knows what a bad idea this would be. Trump has already shown he’s not afraid to properly act if he needs to.
I’ll hold final judgment until we see the full interview, but what they released doesn’t reassure me.
But it was funny, the interview already had folks on the left freaking out that he was on the show at all, and blaming Bari Weiss.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
