Escaped Monkeys No Match for Mississippi Mom – RedState

A Mississippi mom said she was taking no chances after she shot and killed one of the escaped monkeys in her yard after her son alerted her that he spotted it lurking. This followed reports of a group of the primates on the loose after a big rig crash on September 28.

Jessica Bond Ferguson told the Associated Press she did what any mother would do to protect their children and other kids in the area when she shot one of the 21 rhesus monkeys that had escaped from the crash days earlier. The animals were believed to be carrying dangerous diseases, but reports later clarified that that wasn’t the case, RedState reported.

The mother of five, with kids ranging from 4 to 16, said after her oldest told her he spotted the monkey 60 feet from her home, she didn’t hesitate and grabbed her gun and a cell phone to call the police and find the monkey.

“I did what any other mother would do to protect her children,” Ferguson said after spotting the monkey. “I shot at it and it just stood there, and I shot again, and he backed up and that’s when he fell.”

“If it attacked somebody’s kid, and I could have stopped it, that would be a lot on me,” she added, explaining why she decided to shoot it before police arrived. “It’s kind of scary and dangerous that they are running around, and people have kids playing in their yards.”

A post on the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office’s social media confirmed details about one of the lost monkeys being located on a person’s property.

It read:

A homeowner on Hwy 503 near Heidelberg found one of the monkeys on their property this morning. Ms Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks responded, and the monkey is now in their possession. We have no other details at the moment.

As RedState reported, a big rig carrying monkeys who were believed, at that point, to be carrying herpes and COVID crashed just north of Heidelberg, and the animals escaped, leading to a massive search in Mississippi.

The sheriff’s office confirmed the wreck involved a “truck carrying Rehsus monkeys from Tulane University.”

An update later corrected the claim that monkeys were dangerous.

Tulane University’s statement read:

Non-human primates at the TNBRC are provided to other research orgs to advance science. The primates in question belong to another entity & aren’t infectious. We’re actively collaborating with local authorities & will send a team of animal care experts to assist as needed.

On Sunday, the university noted how many monkeys had been recovered.

A Fox News report read:

According to Tulane University, 13 monkeys were located at the crash site and successfully transported to their intended destination last week. Five were killed during the search effort, while three remained unaccounted for until one was recovered Sunday by a homeowner, officials said.

Regardless of what the haters might say about Ferguson’s actions, the Jasper County Sheriff, Randy Johnson, confirmed that the monkeys had an “aggressive” nature and, if located, would need to be “neutralized.”

At the time of this publication, it is unclear the status of the two remaining escaped monkeys.
