It is becoming almost a ho-hum reality that week-to-week we see upheaval in the rankings, as upsets and top-ranked losses are a regular feature – and it was almost more dismaying, save for some last-minute bailouts. On Tuesday, the first playoff rankings were made and saw teams instantly dropping off the projected bracket.
Virginia stopped having its late-game miracles and tossed the ACC into further flux, and Memphis, which had been the Group of 5 representative, lost at home and opened the door for other schools to make a rare playoff bid.
It was a surprisingly fun weekend, so let’s look at some of the shenanigans.

There was a spate of marriage activity at some games. Two Texas Tech fans realized their wedding date was on game day, so they moved the ceremony to Friday, and ended up being featured on College Game Day. Additionally, two other marriage proposals took place on the field in two other games, and one couple was photobombed by Lane Kiffin after their nuptial agreement.

USC executed a successful fake punt, but did so with a new level of deception. Leaning on the permission to have players on both sides of the ball using the same number, the team had third-string QB Sam Huard changing his number days before the game to that of their punter. So as he took the field on 4th and long he appeared like the normal kicker, before hitting a pass for the first down.

On the subject of fake punting, Wisconsin’s kicker led the team in a curious stat. The Badgers used three quarterbacks in the game, who combined for an anemic 5 completions. Sean West hit a lengthy pass for 24 yards on their fake punt, meaning the punter led the team in passing for the day. And, more jarring, the Badgers ended up winning the game over ranked Washington.

Army put together a signature drive to close out its one-point victory over Temple. In the 4th quarter, the Knights held the ball for over 13 minutes, with the final possession being an 18-play marathon that nearly ate up the final 10 minutes.

We mentioned last week that Texas Tech fans were told to refrain from throwing tortillas on the field. The faithful kept the tossing to the stands – although one found its way to the overhead field camera.

The highlight games:
Indiana 27 – Penn State 24
The Nittany Lions are just cursed when it comes to playing top-5 schools. They shocked everyone by taking the lead, with the Hoosiers pinned deep with under two minutes to play. Things looked solid after an initial sack, but Fernando Mendoza hit four huge passes to bring them close, then a miracle catch in the back of the end zone saw receiver Omar Cooper Jr. getting showed out, but he managed to just get toe-tap down for the winning score with 36 seconds remaining.
Oregon 18 – Iowa 16
In another game that was far from a “thriller” but delivered a sterling finish, the Ducks found themselves mired by a stifling Hawkeye defense all game. Iowa took a one-point lead with 1:51 remaining, but then surrendered a quick strike drive by Dante Moore, who barely passed for over 100 yards. Atticus Sappington hit his third field goal from 39 yards for the last-second win.
Texas Tech 29 – BYU 7
This was a top-10 matchup that was never contested. The Red Raiders’ defense was the factor, as BYU’s Bear Bachmeir was bottled up all game. The Cougars could not manage to hit the scoreboard until halfway through the 4rth, when things were out of reach.
Vanderbilt 45 – Auburn 38
Auburn continued the trend of teams playing better after seeing the head coach fired. The Tigers took Vandy and Diego Pavia to overtime, but the quarterback was not to be denied, once again carrying the team on his back. He went for 377 yards passing and three touchdown throws, adding another 112 rushing yards and another score.
Wake Forest 16 – Virginia 9
Just throw the ACC into a blender and make guesses about what will happen. Any chance of another late-game surge was tamped down when QB Chandler Morris left the game early. The difference in this was an 88-yard punt return for the only touchdown of the game.
Texas A&M 38 – Missouri 17
The undefeated Aggies are starting to look scary as they went into a reconstructed Memorial Stadium and treated it like Donald Trump treated the East Wing. Reuben Owens ran for 102 yards and two scores, KC Concepcion was a constant passing threat, and Marcel Reed is settling in as more of a field general at QB.
Here is the new AP Top-25 (First place votes). Washington, Memphis, and Missouri fall off this week, as Pitt, James Madison, and USF enter the poll.
