The Schumer shutdown is nearing its end, with a deal soon headed to the House, where it’s expected to pass. Eight Senate Democrats joined with Republicans to override the frothing mouths of their colleagues, who seem to think they can placate their base by shouting “fight” enough times.

It’s not the mid-2010s anymore, though. The failure theater of performing on social media while winking and nodding at the surrender isn’t enough for the horror show of a base the Democratic Party has coddled over the years. On that note, left-wing echo chamber Bluesky is in the process of a total meltdown over the deal. Here’s just a small sampling.

Schadenfreude aside, this is one case where I don’t hate to say, “I told you so.” I lost count of how many times I warned Democrats that they were playing with fire for cheap political gain by coddling the most radical portion of their base. Now, they are no longer a portion. They are simply the base of the Democratic Party. Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer built a Frankenstein voting bloc, believing they could stop the monster from getting loose with a few pats on the head every now and then.
Nothing short of actual, tangible revolution, up to and including physical violence to depose Republicans, will appease the far-left at this point. That’s how crazy the Democrat base now is, and when you court that demographic, there’s no moderating them into the establishment of the party. On the contrary, they take over the party, and that’s exactly what has happened. Zohran Mamdani is just the latest example, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is going to run for president in 2028. They are ascendant within the Democratic party while the Biden wing continues to collapse, having signed the order for their own destruction. Hubris is a heck of a drug.

For his part, Schumer seems to think he can navigate this by voting no on the deal while allowing others to take the fall. None of the lunatics in his base are falling for that, though.

Democrats had a civil war after the 2024 election, and despite some hints at introspection, the far-left won. You can have multiple civil wars, though, and another one is kicking off. How many more can the already left-wing establishment lose before there’s nothing left?
In theory, this is all a big problem for Democrats because the more ascendant the far-left is, the less electable they should be. Politics doesn’t happen in a vacuum, though. Republicans have to be able to deliver results that steer Americans away from what the Democratic Party is becoming. The inmates are running the asylum right now, but if they escape, what might have appeared to be a blessing for conservatives will suddenly become a nightmare.
