Take the money and run

This story, from KTLA out of Orange County, California, has just about everything. Let’s atart at the beginning.

[Alejandro] Tobarfuentes, a Chilean national, was arrested last summer after he and a partner, Jorge Navarretecorvalan, allegedly broke into a home in San Juan Capistrano and made off with several designer handbags, jewelry and a safe.

A wrong-way car chase ensued where an innocent motorist suffered serious injuries in a head-on collision.

Tobarfuentes and Navarretecorvalan were arrested and charged with burglary. During the arrest, they allegedly provided fake Venezuelan identification cards to Orange County Sheriff’s deputies. The two men are actually legal residents of Chile, and were in the U.S. on travel visas.

The local DA blames the relevant authorities for not doing a better job vetting these guys for the visas. He states,

[This] visa waiver program has created a direct pipeline for organized crime to shuttle thieves into the United States, resulting in Americans continuing to be terrorized by criminals who are stalking them in their homes and waiting for the perfect moment to break their back sliders and steal their most prized possessions.

But wait, there’s more! Alejandro pled guilty and was sentenced to a work camp,

In May, Tobarfuentes arrived at the Francisquito Conservation Camp, which is one of the state’s work camps that allows inmates to work in wildland fire suppression and infrastructure maintenance in order to shave time from their sentences.

Sunday night, he went missing, presumably, never to be seen again. In a sane world, he would have been shipped back to Chile months ago.

But that’s not California.
