Mike Johnson Takes Victory Lap After Shutdown Vote, Shares Important Reminder With Voters – RedState

Perhaps more than anyone else, House Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04) has been the face of congressional Republicans on the Schumer Shutdown, holding the line and reminding the American people nearly every day since it started that it was the Democrats’ fault that the shutdown was in effect, and that they were admittedly doing it for “leverage” and to appease the party’s far-left base.

“After this weekend’s ‘Hate America’ rallies co-sponsored by the Communist Party, I thought [Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) would] finally do the right thing. But he’s still too terrified of his radical base — even admitting he’ll keep the government shut down while hardworking Americans suffer,” Johnson said at the time, on day 23 of the Schumer Shutdown.

As we reported, on Wednesday night, two days after a handful of Senate Democrats finally did their part to begin the end of the longest shutdown in United States history, the House of Representatives – in a 222-209 vote –  took the next-to-last step to ending the Schumer Shutdown, with six Democrats voting in favor along with the GOP majority, and two Republicans voting with Democrats against it.

Before we get to Johnson’s post-vote remarks, here’s a reminder of the House Democrats who voted to reopen the government and the House Republicans who voted against it:

Speaking to reporters, Johnson shared the most important reminder of all: That none of this had to happen, that House Republicans passed a clean continuing resolution on September 19th that contained no Republican priorities and which was designed to “keep the lights on” in the House so those Democrat and Republican priorities alike could be debated and voted on through the proper processes and channels.

In other words, never forget that this shutdown was brought to you by House and Senate Democrats, led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) and Schumer:

The official statement from House GOP leadership laid it out in greater detail:

“The Democrat Shutdown is finally over thanks to House and Senate Republicans. There is absolutely no question now that Democrats are responsible for millions of American families going hungry, millions of travelers left stranded in airports, and our troops left wondering if they would receive their next paycheck. It was the Democrat Party that voted 15 times to keep the government closed and force the longest shutdown in U.S. history.

“All of it was pointless and utterly foolish. Democrats admitted they used the American people as ‘leverage’ and hurt their constituents on purpose — but they got nothing for their selfish political stunt. Voters will remember which party played political games in an attempt to ‘look tough’ to their base, while real people suffered.

“Now that Republicans have succeeded in ending the Democrat Shutdown, we look forward to continuing our important legislative work delivering results for the American people.”

President Trump is scheduled to sign the bill shortly.  Stay tuned to RedState for more coverage of the end of the Schumer Shutdown.

Editor’s Note: After more than 40 days of screwing Americans, a few Dems have finally caved. The Schumer Shutdown was never about principle—just inflicting pain for political points.
