His continued comments, which included criticisms of the Royal Family and the Firm, annoyed King Charles – who was The Prince of Wales at the time.
According to author Tom Bower, Charles wanted Harry and Meghan to see Thomas Markle to put the dispute to bed, and even suggested this when they all spent a holding at the Castle of Mey – the same week as Meghan’s dad’s interviews were published.
As reported by The Daily Mail, Mr Bower said: “That week his irritation about Thomas Markle’s TV interviews, especially his criticism of the Royal Family came to a head.
“‘Can’t she just go and see him and make this stop?’. Charles ‘berated’ Harry.”
The author said that Meghan and Harry explained their reluctance to see her father, citing privacy concerns and other matters, with the duchess reportedly feeling as though the royals didn’t understand the situation.
Bower also claimed that Harry and Meghan, while at the castle, joined a conference call with the late Queen and Charles, where it was suggested that she fly to America to reconcile with her father.
The author claimed that Meghan rejected the suggestion and said it would do more hard than good with the media attention it would create. It is believed Charles and the late Queen, according to Bower, were “perplexed” by her behaviour and excuses.
Meghan Markle is still not on talking terms with her father, telling Oprah Winfrey in 2021 – a year after quitting royal life with Prince Harry by her side – that she “lost” her father when she became a royal.
