The US is halting all asylum decisions – just hours after Donald Trump promised to stop migration from “all third world countries”.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) boss Joseph Edlow confirmed the ban late on Friday night.
Mr Edlow it would be in place “until we can ensure that every alien is vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible” following the killing of a National Guardswoman, allegedly at the hands of an Afghan migrant.
Officers from USCIS, part of the Department of Homeland Security, have now been told to immediately stop approving, denying or closing asylum applications for any and all nationalities.
According to guidance seen by CBS, officers can still move along asylum application and review cases up to the point of making a decision.
“Once you’ve reached decision entry, stop and hold,” the directive says.
After the DC shooting, Mr Trump promised to deport any foreigner “from any country who does not belong here”.
Later on Wednesday, the US stopped processing all immigration requests from Afghans pending a review of “security and vetting protocols”.

Then on Thursday, the USCIS pledged to re-examine green cards given to anyone who came to the US from a list of 19 countries including Afghanistan – as well as American adversaries like Cuba, Haiti, Iran, Somalia and Venezuela.
And finally, on Friday morning, the President embarked on a lengthy attack on migrants and pro-migrant politicians – and explicitly backed “reverse migration” or “remigration”.
“Even as we have progressed technologically, immigration policy has eroded those gains and living conditions for many,” he said.

As a result, Mr Trump pledged to:
- Permanently pause migration from all third world countries to allow the US system to fully recover;
- Terminate all of the millions of Biden illegal admissions, including those signed by “Sleepy Joe Biden’s Autopen“;
- Remove anyone who is not a “net asset to the United States”;
- Remove anyone who is “incapable of loving our country”;
- End all federal benefits and subsidies to non-US citizens;
- Denaturalise migrants who “undermine domestic tranquility”;
- Deport any foreign national who is a public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western civilisation.

On social media, Mr Mamdani said: “I’m devastated to learn of the passing of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard. She was only 20 years old.
“As families across the nation come together today to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us take a moment to think of those in West Virginia who have been plunged into unimaginable grief.”
Nowhere in the statement did Mr Mamdani mention the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal.
