Amber warning as month’s worth of rain set to fall in 24 hours | Weather | News

The UK is bracing for a month’s worth of rain as the Met Office issues an amber weather warning, predicting a massive downpour to kick off December.

Parts of Wales have been slapped with an amber weather warning, while yellow warnings are scattered across the rest of the UK , with heavy rain likely to cause havoc.

The Met Office has urged Brits to prepare for potential flooding as the weather warning kicks in at midnight on Monday, 1st December and will remain in place throughout the day.

Marco Petagna, Senior meteorologist for the Met Office, has suggested that a month’s worth of rain could fall in just 24 hours, with downpours expected nationwide, according to The Independent.

Speaking on Sunday, Petagna warned: “Later today, we’ll start to see some wet and windy weather coming in from the west, and then for a very unsettled day for most parts of the UK going into tomorrow, particularly western parts of England, Wales and southwest Scotland as well.

“We could see up to 120mm of rain, so almost five inches of rain in a few places, that’s on top of what’s been a pretty wet month already. We’re likely to see flooding issues, particularly across South Wales, through tomorrow.”

Alongside the heavy rain, disruption is expected, with potential flooding and travel chaos looming. The Met Office warns that roads may be forced to close, with bus and train services potentially cancelled.

The heaviest downpours are set to batter south Wales from late Sunday into Monday, with the risk of landslides on both natural and infrastructure slopes.

ScotRail has already taken precautions against the wet weather, imposing speed restrictions on certain routes in anticipation of the rainfall.

Alongside the amber warning, other areas across Scotland and England have been issued a yellow warning for rain.

In these regions, spray and flooding could result in challenging driving conditions, with some roads likely to be closed. Power cuts are also a possibility, according to forecasters.

It is recommended that households prepare a flood kit ahead of the deluge to be ready for all eventualities.
