The threat of immigration enforcement aimed at Minneapolis Somalis has set off a panic. City officials including the mayor and police chief are not on board with the idea of law enforcement. They favor non-enforcement, if not obstruction. They are inclined to let sleeping fraudsters lie. They and their friends and family form a crucial component of the partisan political base of the city. This is what happens when you cross a Third-World tribal culture with an urban Democratic establishment.
The United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota continues to fill the void created by local law enfocement. Yesterday one Ibrahim Ahmed Mohamud, a/k/a “Ibbs” and “30,” age 19, pled guilty in federal court to possession of a machinegun. To borrow the New York Daily News headline John Updike fabricated for his fictional alter ego Henry Bech: “MOHAMUD? WHODAT???”
This is what happens when you cross a Third-World tribal culture with an urban Democratic establishment. The Department of Justice press release offers this concise account:
Mohamud is a member of the criminal street gang known as “YSL” (“Young Slime Life”). Witnesses implicated Mohamud, who goes by “Ibbs,” in a drive-by shooting that occurred on February 24, 2024. According to witnesses, Mohamud shot at the victim after mistaking him for a member of a rival street gang known as “Muddy,” which associates with the Somali Outlaws street gang.
Based on this information, law enforcement obtained a search warrant for Mohamud and his vehicle. Officers found two guns inside Mohamud’s car—a Glock 19x 9mm pistol equipped with a switch, rendering it fully automatic, and a Glock 17 9mm pistol. These firearms were forensically linked to a shooting that occurred just two days prior at a residence in Lino Lakes, Minnesota. The targets of that shooting were suspected members of the Muddy street gang. One of those targets had previously been the victim of another gang-related assault by YSL members during a basketball game at Robbinsdale High School on January 28, 2025.
During the vehicle search, police squad vehicle video recorded Mohamud as he attempted to pressure a juvenile occupant of the vehicle into taking responsibility for the firearms, believing the juvenile would not be prosecuted due to his age. Mohamud’s DNA was found on the Glock 19x 9mm pistol equipped with a switch.
Only last year Mohamud was charged in a Twin Cities drive-by shooting. The victim told police he learned via Snapchat that he had been mistaken for someone from south Minneapolis who drove a car similar to the one he was driving. Police obtained photos of Mohamud with a gun and learned he had stabbed someone at a Minneapolis high school’s Culture Night. Mohamud was sentenced to probation for the stabbing. I trust that Mr. Mohamud is now in custody while he awaits the sentencing hearing that will be scheduled at a later date.
I can’t find a story on Mohamud in the Star Tribune, but there is plenty on the panic in wheedle park. The politicians, the media, and even the police chief are doing their best to foment and feed the panic. Mayor Jacob Frey has bravely vowed to stand with Minneapolis Somalis “amid crackdowns by the Trump administration aimed, he said, at even American citizens, for ‘no other reason’ than appearing Somali.” That’s what the man said. That’s what the Star Tribune reports.
