A paedophile jailed for sleeping with two schoolboys faces being permanently banned from teaching for life. Rebecca Joynes, 31, sobbed as she was sentenced to six and a half years at Manchester Crown Court on July 4 last year.
Joynes, formerly of Thingwall, Wirral, had been found guilty of six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child. The offences related to two boys she met through her job at a school in Greater Manchester. The boys can’t be named because of their ages.
A professional misconduct hearing sitting on Thursday (December 4) found her guilty of “unacceptable conduct”. It means Joynes could be permanently banned from teaching.
Panel members heard Joynes refused to attend the hearing, which was heard remotely, and had no one present to represent her, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Shirley Duckworth, speaking for the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), said Joynes’s convictions were of the utmost severity.
She said Joynes was guilty of an abuse of trust in relation to one of her victims, identified as Pupil A in the hearing. Ms Duckworth pointed to the trial judge observing the “significant” difference in Joynes’s and Pupil A’s ages.
The Agency’s rep said the crimes committed against the second boy, referred to as Pupil B, were marked by grooming and an abuse of trust.
She noted that the offences Joynes committed against Pupil B were carried out while she was on bail for crimes relating to Pupil A.
Joynes was sacked from her maths teaching job for gross misconduct in July 2022 after her first court appearance.
Ms Duckworth told the panel fatherhood had been thrust upon Pupil B after Joynes gave birth to the boy’s child.
Joynes had manipulated Pupil B by purchasing a £345 Gucci belt for him, leaving the lad feeling deceived by a teacher he should have trusted, the panel heard.
Panel chairman Phil Thompson said Joynes’s conduct amounted to “unacceptable behaviour” and had “brought the profession into disrepute”.
Ms Duckworth said it was necessary and proportionate for the panel to recommend to the Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, that Joynes be permanently banned from returning to education.
The panel deliberated the recommendation in private. Mr Thompson said it would take several days before the Education Secretary made her decision public.
