A man has been found dead on a busy motorway, police have said in a statement. The 24-year-old was found on a slip road along the M4, after police received reports of a man in distress on a footbridge nearby. The motorway was closed near Bridgend in Wales on Saturday, December 6, as emergency services attended the scene and unsuccessfully attempted resuscitation, Wales Online reports.
South Wales Police officers arrived at a slip road near Junction 36 of the major road shortly before 9:30pm on Saturday, after receiving a report of “a man in distress”, prompting a temporary closure in both directions. South Wales Ambulance service also attended the scene, alongside Crime Scene Investigators (CSI).
Ambulance workers attempted to resuscitate the 24-year-old, but were unable to do so, a spokesperson for the force said.
They added that his family has been informed and are being supported.
The full police statement read: “Officers were called to the M4 footbridge near Junction 36 shortly before 9:30pm on Saturday, December 6, following a report of a man in distress.
“The body of a man was located on the slip road nearby upon emergency services arrival. Ambulance [workers] unsuccessfully attempted resuscitation. The motorway was briefly closed in both directions to allow for police and CSI attendence.
“The man has been identified as a 24-year-old man from Litchard, Bridgend. His family are aware and have confirmed ID, and are being supported.”
The partial closure of the M4, one of the UK’s busiest motorways, extended from Junction 35 to Junction 38 and was lifted in the early hours of this morning.
In the initial hours after the closure was enforced, speeds on the M4 westbound and eastbound near Bridgend averaged 15mph, according to reports.
