‘Legend’ retired police officer named as Bondi victim | World | News

A ‘much loved’ retired police officer has been named as one of the 15 victims of the horror attack at Bondi Beach. Peter Meagher was labelled an ‘absolute legend’ by the rugby club where he has been manager for nearly a decade.

A statement posted by Randwick Rugby confirmed that their First Grade Manager and ‘loyal club volunteer’ was one of the victims of the Bondi Beach terror attack. General manager of the club, Mark Harrison said:”Devastatingly, Peter was caught up in these horrible Bondi Beach shootings and was sadly one of 15 innocent people, who have lost their lives.”

Peter has been the manager for nearly and decade and also spent nearly four decades as a serving NSW police officer was a Detective Sergeant before retiring. He was at the Hanukkah event as a freelance photographer.

Peter is one of 15 victims who were killed in the terror attack on Sunday, December 14. A further 40 people were rushed to hospital and many continue to be treated as locals have gathered across the city to donate blood.

The statement said: “For him it was simply a catastrophic case of being in the wrong place and at the wrong time. The tragic irony is that he spent so long in the dangerous front line as a Police Officer and was struck down in retirement while taking photos in his passion role is really hard to comprehend.”

The club sent their love to Peter’s wife Virginia, his brothers Greg, David, Andrew and Paul and their extended families.

The statement reads: “’Marzo’ as he was universally known, was a much loved figure and absolute legend in our club, with decades of voluntary involvement, he was one of the heart and soul figures of Randwick Rugby. The Meagher family are absolute royalty in our Club, with Marzo following in the giant Myrtle Green footsteps of his grandfather the legendary Wally Meahger and his father Ron who was a former Club President.

“For much of the last decade Marzo has been our trusted First Grade Manager and this news has already hit our players, coaches, managers, volunteers and supporters extremely hard. Prior to that he was also a highly respected long term referee who was well known and respected in Sydney Rugby circles.

“Rest in Peace ‘Marzo’ – we all love you and will miss you greatly. We are devastated.

“Cherish your loved ones folks, take care of yourself and look out for those that maybe struggling. Again, our heart goes out to all the victims, the Jewish community and all those impacted by this terrible tragedy.”
