Donald Trump announced plans to build the “largest battleship in the history of the world” in a major media briefing, as tensions between Venezuela and the US continue to escalate. The US President held a press conference in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday, December 22.
Joined by the US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of the Navy John Phelan and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the US leader made a major announcement set to impact his country’s military. Standing next to a board showing a battleship reading “Trump Class”, the US President said: “There’s never been anything like these ships. These have been under design consideration for a long time.
“They’ll be the fastest, the biggest by far and 100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built. The largest battleship in the history of the world.”
The US leader also said the vessels, made of steel and weighing in at 30,000 to 40,000 tonnes, will be armed with “guns and missiles” as well as the “most sophisticated lasers in the world”.
The US President said the new ‘Trump Class’ of battleship will initially see only two vessels being built, but it will expand to a fleet of 20 to 25.
