Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) has a lot of embarrassing distinctions from a political standpoint, not the least of which is being part of one of the few vice presidential debates people actually remember, with JD Vance absolutely cleaning his clock in October 2024 without breaking a sweat.
After getting humiliated the following month as well, one would think that Walz would lie low in 2025 to avoid further national embarrassment. But, not only has he not done so, he’s running for reelection as governor in 2026. Even more amazingly, Walz is rumored to be considering a 2028 presidential run, even though he said in July that a 2028 bid was off the table for him.
He certainly has given every indication that he’s interested, between the town hall tour he did earlier this year in Republican-won congressional districts, the repeated comparisons of President Trump to authoritarian dictators, and even once insinuating that he wished the baseless Lincoln Project-fueled rumors of Trump’s death that circulated around the Labor Day holiday weekend were true.

But here we are closing in on the end of 2025, and Tim Walz isn’t laughing anymore, thanks in part to the wave of fraud scandals in his state, all of which happened under his watch, and which equate not to just millions in stolen taxpayer money but billions.
Needless to say, Minnesota and Walz are on the Trump administration’s radar in a big way, with the DOJ continuing its investigations and filing charges, and the House Oversight Committee expanding its own probe:
A widening federal investigation into Minnesota’s massive fraud scandal is drawing in whistleblowers, mayors and state lawmakers amid growing scrutiny of state officials, House Oversight Chairman James Comer told Fox News on Tuesday.
“The walls are caving in on Tim Walz,” Comer, R-Ky., said on “America’s Newsroom.”
“This massive amount of fraud is affecting and impacting every citizen of Minnesota because they’re having to cut services because so much of the money for social programs was wasted and defrauded by this Somali population.”
Comer added in the interview with Fox News that “one of the things [Walz has] said in the last 48 hours was that the Oversight Committee didn’t need to worry about this investigation, that he would take care of it. No one in America believes that…. We are going to investigate this.”

In another interview, Comer nailed how critical the Somali community in Minnesota, which is at the center of some of the fraud investigations, had become to the political aspirations of Democrats in the state, which was a big reason why the scandals were able to fly under the radar for so long:
According to Comer, those appeals went nowhere because Democratic leaders feared the political consequences of taking action. He said Minnesota’s Somali community plays a central role in the state’s Democratic electoral math. “This Somali population has become a massive part of the Democrat base in Minnesota,” Comer said. “It’s the whole key to the business model of success for the Democrat Party in Minnesota — and on the presidential scale to win the state of Minnesota and get those Electoral College votes.”
