UK snow maps flash purple with polar vortex hitting 101 counties and areas | Weather | News

A huge number of counties in the UK will be hit with snow on one day in January, according to the latest weather maps. Forecaster WXCharts currently shows a purple sheet sweeping over the nation, signalling snow in most of the regions, with only a handful of counties escaping it. December has been a mild month for many parts of the country, but January could be more wintry based on the latest predictions.

WXCharts’ latest maps show a sheet of snow covering the majority of mainland Britain and Northern Ireland on Thursday, January 8. Snow appears to be heaviest in the morning time around 6am, but will be present throughout the day for most of the country. The Met Office has not given a verdict on whether or not we will see snow in January, as snow is notoriously difficult for meteorologists to predict. However, the latest live maps show a considerable amount of snow.

Here are the counties and regions that will see snow on January 8, according to current maps.

The Met Office currently predicts a “cold, showery, northerly flow” towards the beginning of January, followed by a “fairly settled period”.

However, it also warns that “there will be some wintry hazards including perhaps snow to low levels to north facing coastal areas at times”.

“Showers will likely spread further inland at times, and there may be some windier periods with more prolonged rain; however, on the whole it will be drier than average,” the forecast reads.

“Temperatures will likely be below average for much of the period though it may turn near average or above average later.”
