Aaron Beardsley, Head of Operational Delivery for Cadent in the East of England, said: “We have taken a safety-first decision to evacuate properties in Wantz Road, Maldon, after finding gas readings within a building.
“The source – a leak on a nearby, underground pipe which was part of a gas mains replacement programme – has been identified and engineers are on site carrying out repair work.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we deal with this incident. This is all about keeping everyone safe.
“Once we have completed the repair, Cadent engineers will carry out checks to make sure the readings have cleared. We will then be able to reoccupy homes when all is safe.
