Several children have been rushed to the hospital after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning while falling ill at a party.

The youngsters were with their parents at the religious celebration in a restaurant in Via Roggerone, Genoa, Italy, when they reportedly became ill, one after another, and needed medical treatment after suffering from headaches, dizziness and nausea.

Italian national broadcasting channel RAI, said a “faulty heater” caused the poisoning, reporting the local fire service.

All the patients are in a stable condition and their life is not in danger, a message from the hospital said, reported Italian newspaper La Repubblica. The statement read: “17 children with carbon monoxide poisoning, along with three parents, are currently hospitalized.

“All patients are under constant surveillance and monitoring by healthcare staff, their life is not in danger, and their clinical condition is stable. Some of them are undergoing oxygen therapy and have been hospitalized in different departments, based on specific clinical and organizational needs.

“The patients for whom hyperbaric chamber treatment was indicated have already completed the planned treatment and have returned from San Martino Hospital.” The statement added: “As per protocol, discharge is not expected before 24 hours of observation: discharge will take place progressively between this evening and tomorrow.”
