British rocker Yungblud has called on his fans to lend their voices to the people of Iran in an impassioned mid-set speech while on tour in Australia.
The 28-year-old star changed the tempo from rocker to real-talk while in between sets at his Tuesday gig in Melbourne to speak about the current Iran crisis.
He told the 10,000-person strong crowd the tale of Mahsa Amini.
“Two years ago, I spoke about a girl called Mahsa Amini from Iran, who was murdered for not wearing her hijab. And no, it is not my prerogative to question somebody’s religion, but this community fights for equality and liberation throughout the f***ing world,” he said to fans at Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
“What is going on in Iran is beautiful because this revolution is led by the f***ing women. And for four days, they have had their internet cut off, they have had their electricity cut off, they are in darkness.”
He then called on fans to use their voices to amplify those whose are stifled, like those in Iran.
He said: “ They are asking for our voice, we have to be their f***ing light right now.
“So speak, shout, post, because they are fighting for freedom, they are fighting for their freedom, they are fighting for our freedom. Because nobody is free until we are all f***ing free.”
The death of Mahsa Amini triggered mass protests in Iran in 2022 after she was arrested by Iran’s morality police for not weaning her hijab correctly. Officials claimed the 22-year-old suffered a heart attack while in police custody and was transported to hospital. Eyewitnesses who were detained with Amini by police came forward to reveal she had been severely beaten by officers. She later died as a result of her injuries.
Her death prompted mass protests and unrest across the Middle Eastern nation, similar to what we are seeing unfold in Iran right now.
