Snow appears to be just days away from making a comeback in the UK as advanced weather maps indicate flurries of up to four inches per hour are possible.

The ECMWF weather model predicts scattered snow could descend on the UK on January 23, touching down in parts of Northern Ireland, Wales, the north of England and Scotland around midday. The most intense flurries are expected to strike Scotland first, with Glasgow squarely in the crosshairs.

Maps then depict snow showers affecting the UK for five consecutive days. Data for midday on January 24 suggests Bristol could experience snow as the wintry weather impacts the south-west and Wales.

Manchester and Aberdeen might also see some around this time as flurries persist in the north and in Scotland.

This scattered pattern is also anticipated on January 25, but on January 26 the maps suggest heavy snow will become more concentrated in Scotland and South Wales, where it could fall at an astonishing rate of around four inches per hour at 6am.

On January 27, the maps illustrate another small yet potent snow front bringing four inches per hour to southern England – with Brighton seemingly set to witness some of the white stuff.

And snow coverage maps for this five-day period reveal the full extent of the wintry weather onslaught. On January 24, they depict snow settled on the ground in Wales, central and northern England, Northern Ireland and most of Scotland.

Snowfall is predicted across the UK on 27th January, with Brighton and Southampton on the south coast, northern regions, and Wales all expected to see a dusting. However, aside from the Scottish Highlands where up to 32cm could accumulate, the data suggests that snowfall will be relatively light.

The Lake District may receive around 9cm, while other low-lying areas are likely to see just 1cm or 2cm settling.

The Met Office has also indicated the possibility of further snowfall before the month’s end. Their forecast for 20th to 29th January reads: “Throughout this period, the UK will see a battle between Atlantic weather systems attempting to arrive from the west while high pressure and colder conditions attempt to exert some influence from the east. Initially, milder Atlantic air is expected to dominate.

“Temperatures overall likely to be around average with some night frosts in clearer areas. Later in the period, there is an increased chance that conditions will turn colder. This aspect of the forecast is still somewhat uncertain but the potential transition to colder weather also increases the chance of snow across parts of the country.”

This follows the recent ‘multi-hazard’ event, Storm Goretti, which brought winds of up to 99mph and as much as 27cm of snow to parts of the UK, even triggering a red weather warning earlier this month.
