Train derailment in Spain: Up to ’10 dead and 100 injured’ | World | News

Up to 10 people are reported to have died and 100 people injured after a train derailment, Spanish media say. Two high-speed trains derailed on Sunday in southern Spain, according to the railway operator ADIF.

At least 25 people have been seriously injured, according to the emergency services of Andalusia. The incident occurred near Adamuz, a town close to Cordoba. Rail network operator Adif confirmed the derailment, stating that the Iryo 6189 service, travelling from Málaga towards Madrid, left the track and crashed onto an adjacent line.

Iyro, a high-speed train operator in Spain confirmed the derailemt on X. “The service had departed from Málaga at 18:40 and, at the time of the incident, approximately 300 people were on board,” said the statement. 

“Iryo deeply regrets what has happened and has activated all emergency protocols.” The company added it is working closely with the relevant authorities to manage the situation.

A second train travelling between Madrid and Huelva, on the adjacent track, derailed as well. All high-speed train traffic between Madrid and Andalusia has been suspended because of the incident. 

Andalusia’s emergency services said all rail traffic in the area was halted, with at least nine ambulances and multiple emergency support vehicles sent to the scen

The regional interior minister has activated emergency procedures, with a command post established in Adamuz.

Salvador Jimenez, a journalist for RTVE, was a passenger on board the train from Cordoba to Madrid. He told the news channel that one of the derailed carriages “had completely overturned” and had broken windows.

He shared images showing the rear carriage of the train lying on its side, with evacuated passengers spotted sitting alongside the overturned carriage.
