Prime Minister Keir Starmer will not travel to Davos because there are “lots of challenges on his time”, one of his senior ministers has said.
Darren Jones, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, was asked why Sir Keir would not travel to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland amid Donald Trump’s latest flurry of social media claims.
He told Sky News: “The Prime Minister has always got lots of challenges on his time. The Chancellor is in Davos, the Business Secretary is in Davos. Davos is predominantly a place to talk about the economy and business investing.”
French President Emmanuel Macron is reported to have texted Trump, offering him a G7 meeting following the gathering, according to a message shared by the US leader on social media.
Elsewhere, Mr Jones said he hopes that Mr Trump’s threats of tariffs do not lead to him acquiring Greenland.
Asked if he believed that would be the outcome of the US president’s actions, the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister told Times Radio: “Look, I hope not.”
