A Rapprochement?

Minnesota’s elected officials, led by Tim Walz, have not just failed to cooperate with ICE, they have effectively made it impossible to enforce federal law here. By making their state a jurisdiction where federal law does not govern–something we have not witnessed since 1861–they can be said to have effectively seceded from the Union. I think it would be entirely reasonable for the federal government to suspend all payments to Minnesota under all national programs–Medicaid, highways, education, everything–on that basis.

The word behind the scenes is that less extreme members of Minnesota’s Democratic Party are unhappy with Governor Walz’s radicalism, and may fear the kind of federal response I just suggested. I am not convinced this is true, mostly because I do not believe there is any moderate element within the DFL Party. Consider this official DFL statement, for example:

The DFL Party is flat-out insurrectionist and, as best I can tell, unanimously so.

Nevertheless, President Trump holds out hope. He made this statement just an hour or two ago:

Did Walz really call the President to suggest they work together? It is hard to imagine, but that is what Trump says. Tom Homan’s presence in Minnesota can only help, although the situation here is so far gone that the 11th Airborne may be a more practical solution.

Time will tell whether Tim Walz has really changed his stripes.
