It’s tough being a family member of the President of the United States. But it’s even tougher when that president is Donald Trump. In January of 2025, Barron Trump, 19, the youngest of Trump’s sons, came to the aid of a friend way across the pond in London, whom he witnessed over FaceTime being assaulted by a man. On Wednesday, a Russian man was convicted in connection with the assault on Barron Trump’s friend.
Barron Trump called police in the British capital and his intervention more than a year ago led Wednesday to the assault conviction of Matvei Rumiantsev.

Matvei Rumiantsev, 22, was convicted in the case, saying that jealousy over his girlfriend’s friendship with Barron was the reason for the assault. Rumiantsev was acquitted of rape and choking charges related to the night Barron called police, in addition to rape and assault allegations from November of 2024.

My colleague Bob Hoge initially reported that Barron was on a FaceTime call with the friend he knew from social media in London when he saw, just for a split second, a bare-chested man on the screen. The camera then showed what appeared to be his friend being hit. She was crying and then said something in Russian. The connection then went dead.
Barron immediately called 999, the British equivalent of 911, to report the crime, and instead, had to deal with a dispatcher who seemed more interested in minor details than helping his friend. While the dispatcher tried to get information about his friend, Barron can be heard on the recorded call saying, “I don’t think these details matter, she’s getting beat up.” To which the dispatcher says, “If you want to help the person, you’ll answer my questions clearly and precisely.”

The suspect testified in the case that not only was he jealous of Barron Trump, but that he felt sorry for him because he felt his girlfriend was leading Trump on. Rumiantsev’s attorney, Sasha Weiss, argued that Barron was unaware the girl had a boyfriend, and also, just how much Barron could have seen in just a few seconds. The jury was instructed to take Barron Trump’s accounts of what happened with caution because they came only through written accounts and recordings. Barron did not testify, nor was he cross-examined.
However, Barron was on the FaceTime call long enough to hear his friend being called some nasty names, and seeing her being grabbed by the hair and pushed to the floor. She rightly credits Barron Trump for saving her life. She went on to say, “He [Barron Trump] helped save my life. That call was like a sign from God at that moment.”

It seems like all we hear about the young people of Barron Trump’s generation are bad things. They are lazy or have no work ethic. But like a lot of other things, you can’t judge it all by just a few people. It’s nice to know that perhaps among young men of Barron Trump’s age, chivalry is not dead.
Sentencing for Rumiantsev is scheduled for March 27.
