Met Office issues new warnings for ice for 42 areas | Weather | News

The Met Office has issued two new weather warnings for ice. The national forecaster issued on Sunday two yellow alerts for ice. One envelops the whole of Northern Ireland, and will come into force at 7pm today. It will remain in place until 9am on Monday.

The second weather warning covers a large area of Wales and the South West of England, as well as four areas of the South East. It will be in place from 10pm on Sunday to 9am on Monday.

The Met Office warns that “icy patches may form on untreated surfaces” overnight due to recent rain and plunging temperatures.

The warnings read: “With wet surfaces following recent rain, and temperatures falling close to or below freezing, icy patches will be possible on untreated surfaces for a time on Sunday night into Monday morning.” Both alerts also warn of potential fog patches which could “pose an additional hazard”.

The national weather forecaster also urged people to be careful with icy conditions, saying: “Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.”

The advice continued: “If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
