Spain gives illegals the vote

I’m not kidding. From Fox News last week,

Spain legalizes up to 500,000 undocumented migrants, sparking backlash.

The socialist prime minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, heads a minority government propped up by the nation’s separatist parties. His party finished second in the 2023 election, behind the  conservative People’s Party. The socialists lagged the conservatives in the popular vote by more than 340,000.

Sanchez is not going to allow that to happen again.

Telling, this isn’t an act of parliament, it’s a “royal decree.” The next Spanish election will be held no later than 2027, and the newest Spaniards will be registered to vote, just in time.

In the U.K., the socialist party has one-upped Sanchez by cancelling elections altogether that they were sure to lose. From the U.K. Guardian,

Local elections to be delayed in 29 areas in England as part of shake-up of councils:

More than 4 million people will see their local elections delayed in May, in some areas for the second year running

The conveniently-timed shake-up prevents elections that would have happened on May 7. As the Guardian reports, the biggest loser from this move is the upstart Reform Party, which was the big winner of last May’s local elections.

This is how democracy dies, not with a bang, but a whimper.
