THE next Suffragan Bishop of St Germans, in the diocese of Truro, is to be the Revd James Treasure, Downing Street announced on Monday.
He succeeds the Rt Revd Hugh Nelson, who was translated to Worcester last year (News, 29 July 2025).
Mr Treasure became the Vicar of St Thomas and St Luke (known locally as “Top Church”), Dudley, in 2018, and has been Team Rector since 2023.
He trained at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, and was ordained priest in 2017. He served his title at St John the Baptist and Holy Innocents, Kidderminster, in Worcester diocese. He was previously “a leader in a free church” before his move back to the Church of England, the Truro statement said.
“I am absolutely delighted to be joining the diocese of Truro, the land of the saints, at this exciting time and cannot wait to discover all that God is doing amongst you,” Mr Treasure said on Monday. “I am especially looking forward to discovering more of the beauty of the Church across our diocese — in its worship, its communities, and its faithful presence in every place.”
Mr Treasure also posted on the Top Church Facebook page: “I know this may come as quite a shock to you and bring lots of mixed emotions. It’s certainly not a decision I’ve taken lightly, but Esther and I have both experienced a very deep sense of God calling us.” The Revd Esther Treasure, his wife, was ordained priest in 2024 and is currently the Curate of Top Church.
Welcoming the appointment, the Bishop of Truro, the Rt Revd David Williams, said: “We are looking forward to James, Esther and their family joining us later this year. James has spent his whole working life in church leadership and will bring significant pastoral, preaching, and strategic gifts to our team. I am delighted we have discerned a call for him and his family here.”
Mr Treasure will be consecrated on 1 May in St Paul’s Cathedral, and formally welcomed to the diocese of Truro in a service at Truro Cathedral on 10 May.
