What’s Up With Tucker Carlson?

Tucker Carlson posted this video yesterday. First the video, then some comments and questions:

In his first sentence, Carlson says he has found out that the CIA is preparing a criminal referral against him to the Department of Justice. Presumably, Carlson learned that through a leak by someone in the CIA, or possibly DOJ. Assuming that he isn’t just making it up.

At one point, however, he also says something like, “When you get a call from a reporter who knows the content of your texts, it’s pretty clear something’s going on.” Is he saying that happened here? So that someone at the CIA leaked his texts to a reporter? I think he may be referring to some other incident, e.g. when he was trying to set up an interview with Vladimir Putin, but this isn’t clear.

Carlson says he was talking to “people in Iran” before the war began. By “people in Iran,” I think he means people in government, not anti-regime activists. It would be interesting to know more about Carlson’s relationships with the mullahs or members of the IRGC.

In his tweet, Carlson says that “the CIA has been reading [his] texts.” If he has been texting with senior members of the Iranian regime or the IRGC, the CIA would indeed be reading his texts–not because they are spying on Tucker, but because they are intercepting the regime’s communications. Carlson implies that one or more intelligence agencies have been spying on him, but offers no evidence to that effect.

What is the supposed crime of which he stands accused, presumably having something to do with communications with Iranian leaders? Carlson speculates that it involves the “foreign agent act,” by which he means the Foreign Agents Registration Act. This strikes me as farfetched. He also says that he “doubts it will even become a case.” I agree. I suppose that means we will have only his word that the “spying” ever took place.

Carlson says that the intelligence agencies spy on Americans and then leak information about that spying in order to “humiliate and terrify” the subjects of their investigations. Of course, that didn’t happen here: the only person talking about the alleged spying is Tucker himself.

Carlson can’t get through a two-minute video without trotting out his favorite hobby horse, saying that ““Some people are mad at me for my views about Israel,” and that “unlike many,” i.e. Jews, he has only one loyalty, to the U.S. Those comments seem entirely gratuitous.

So what is actually going on here? Maybe nothing. Maybe this is just one more desperate attempt by Carlson to remain relevant. That said, I would like to get a look at the texts between Carlson and “people in Iran.” If they reflect only credit on Carlson, he could publish them himself.

There has been a fair amount of speculation on X about Carlson’s video. This is typical; full text:

This photo is hilarious in hindsight.

Trump knew Tucker was talking to Iran.

So he invites him to the Oval Office before the strike… knowing Tucker will run straight back and relay it.

Iran sees this photo.
Thinks Tucker has Trump’s ear.
Thinks Trump is bluffing.

Meanwhile Trump’s sitting there smiling because he wanted them to believe it.

Tucker’s ego sells the deception.

Khamenei buys it.

And just like that Tucker unknowingly helps take out the Supreme Leader… and now Americas biggest traitor may be heading to prison.

Perfectly played.

Who knows? It might be true, except for the part about Tucker going to prison.
