Most Americans before Feb. 1 had little to no awareness of the particulars of Pima County, Arizona, which is in part of the state bordering our neighbor, Mexico. The second largest city in AZ, Tucson, is located in Pima County, though, and during the first days of February, the whole country became intimately familiar with the tale of one resident in particular. You know who I mean: Nancy Guthrie. And in recent days, the tale has taken a political turn unrelated to the alleged abduction case.
If you have somehow missed the biggest human interest/true crime story of 2026, RedState’s Sister Toldjah has filed a plethora of stories over the past month-plus on Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother and grandmother, including this early missive on Feb. 2 (find more of our coverage here):
When Mrs. Guthrie, who is NBC News “Today Show” co-host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, did not show up for Sunday church, a missing persons report was filed, reportedly by a concerned family member.
Toldjah also shared some information from a press conference held by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, including the disturbing detail that Guthrie left her home against her will:
“She did not leave on her own. We know that,” he noted.
Toldjah continued:
Later in the day, however, Nanos revealed an even more chilling detail, saying that he believed that Mrs. Guthrie was kidnapped while she was asleep in her bed:
The disappearance is very disturbing to the community, Nanos told MS NOW — formerly known as MSNBC — on Monday, saying investigators believe she was removed from her house against her will.
“You have an 84 year old lady who is home in bed, asleep in the middle of night (and) disappears,” Nanos said. “That’s not Tucson and that’s not who we are here.”

The Pima County Sheriff was later called out for a stunt he reportedly pulled by refusing to allow the feds to handle the processing of crucial evidence, collected at the scene, at their renowned Quanitico facilities, as we wrote.
RedState also reported about the joint efforts of federal and local investigators leading to the search of a Tucson home. Authroties detained at least four people while the home was searched by a SWAT team. As my colleague Bonchie wrote:
NewsNation’s Brian Entin was on the scene when a mixture of local and federal authorities arrived. He was eventually told to exit the perimeter, but reported that none of the law enforcement had left at that point.
#BREAKING: At 1204am Eastern Saturday, @NewsNation‘s @BrianEntin reveals he was moved back from inside the perimeter after a few hours on the inside, adds “10 FBI cars…just arrived” on-scene of an ongoing SWAT operation in Pima County connected to the Nancy Guthrie search and… pic.twitter.com/LuYMcJOHbV

At a separate location, as Bonchie added, “the vehicle was then loaded onto a flatbed truck and taken into custody, presumably to be forensically investigated.”
As we revealed in an update on the story, no one was arrested by PCSD. That’s where we left things on Feb.14.

This past weekend marks the seventh week since a missing person’s report was filed for Nancy Guthrie.
There have also been pointed questions about Sheriff Nanos’ time while working at the El Paso Police Department, and some factual weirdness in entries on his official resume.
But as I mentioned, things have just taken a turn… and they might be for the worse, politically speaking, for Sheriff Nanos, in the form of a recall effort.
Local TV station KOLD in Tucson has confirmed reports of the recall with the Pima County Elections Department, according to the station’s evening news anchor Mary Coleman, who shared the confirmation in an X post on Tuesday night
SHERIFF RECALL EFFORT: We’ve confirmed with the Pima County Elections Department that a recall effort has been launched for Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. It was filed on March 12th.

It read:
SHERIFF RECALL EFFORT: We’ve confirmed with the Pima County Elections Department that a recall effort has been launched for Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. It was filed on March 12th.
…
To move forward, 120,000 signatures have to be collected in the next 120 days to prompt the actual recall.
This comes in the wake of scrutiny over the handling of the Nancy Guthrie investigation.
Sheriff Nanos, according to KOLD, commented on the report about the recall effort:
We’re aware of the recall and it’s the right of the people. We’ll always honor the will of the people and that’s what makes democracy.” [sic]
You read that right. Democracy is on the line, folks. Which party do you reckon Nanos roots for?
This is a developing story. RedState will provide updates as warranted.
