WHEN the Indian cricket team lifted the International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 trophy last week, one of the defining stories of the campaign was the resurgence of the wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, whose performance turned him into the central figure of the team’s path to victory.
Samson finished as the Player of the Tournament after scoring 321 runs in five innings, at a strike-rate close to 200, delivering crucial scores at the business end of the tournament.
The Kerala-born batsman produced back-to-back innings of 80-plus in the Super Eight clash against the West Indies, the semi-final against England, and the final against New Zealand, helping India to seize momentum in high-pressure matches.
For Samson, however, the journey to the title was as much about belief as it was about the game.
One of India’s most prominent Christian cricketers, Samson openly acknowledged the part played by faith in his journey after the final, thanking “the Lord Almighty” for guiding him through a difficult phase earlier in the year.
The wicketkeeper-batsman had struggled with inconsistent form before the tournament and was not part of the initial line-up. But, once given an opportunity, he emerged as the team’s most decisive performer.
“You can dream about where you want to go, but you cannot control the path completely,” Samson said, reflecting on the World Cup victory. “During the tournament, the focus was on what the team required.”
Samson has often spoken about how prayer and faith help him deal with pressure and uncertainty in professional sport. Raised in a Christian family in Kerala, he has said that belief plays a part in shaping his mental approach to setbacks and success.
His turnaround was also aided by guidance from senior players. Samson has credited conversations with the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar for helping him to overcome earlier disappointments and to remain patient in international cricket.
Sports analysts say that Samson’s campaign demonstrated how mental resilience and clarity of role can transform a player’s fortunes in a short-format tournament.
His performances ultimately gave India the edge in key matches and helped to secure another global title.
For Samson, the 2026 World Cup was more than a sporting achievement: it was the culmination of persistence, preparation, and faith coming together on the biggest stage.
