FORMERLY Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Brighton, Roger Homan died suddenly on 13 March. He was born in Brighton in 1944 and educated at Varndean Grammar School. After teacher training in Brighton, he taught for a year in Middlesbrough.
Returning to Sussex, he taught at Ringmer High School before being recruited to lecture in religious studies at Brighton Polytechnic. Always exploring his subject, he subsequently gained a doctorate at Lancaster University, branching out to study for an MA from the London School of Economics.
He became Senior Lecturer at Brighton Polytechnic, becoming Professor of Religious Studies when it gained university status.
Roger’s personal intellectual interests included church history, liturgy, and architecture, on which he was a prolific and popular author, his increasing blindness notwithstanding.
He was a long-time Vice-President of the Prayer Book Society.
In June 2025, he joined the College of St Barnabas, Lingfield, contributing much to its intellectual life and worshipping community.
He was godfather to eight children, who loved him dearly.
