What problems? | Power Line

Your “dog bites man” headline, presented by the LA Times,

Californians say Newsom is more focused on boosting presidential prospects than fixing state.

The Times reports,

By more than 2 to 1, California registered voters believe that Gov. Gavin Newsom is more focused on boosting his presidential prospects than on fixing the problems in his own state, according to a new poll.

Only “2 to 1”? It’s so patently obvious, the result should be 100-0. What amazes me is the formulation of the alternative question, which reads.

He’s governing the state to solve its problems.

Some 41 percent of Democrats agree with that statement, a level that seems simultaneously too high and too low. Presumably, these are people who voted for Newsom. If you voted for Newsom, I have to believe that you think there are no problems in California left to be solved.

If you are voting for Newsom to solve problems, what are they? The man has enjoyed an uninterrupted, nearly 30-year run in public office: on the San Francisco board of supervisors, Mayor, Lt. Governor, and now Governor. I am hard pressed to name a single aspect in which life in the Golden State has improved during his decades in office.

Perhaps a partial answer to my question can be found buried in the Times‘ poll. A narrow majority of voters (49-43) supported taxpayer-provided health care for illegal alien adults.

California voters polled are evenly split (46-46) on Newsom’s overall job performance.
