During the 1988 Democrat National Convention, Texas Democrat Gov. Ann Richards famously said during her keynote address, “Poor George, he can’t help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth,” in reference to Vice President George H.W. Bush, who would go on to win presidential election in November.
Today, in reference to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor we might rewrite the quote, thusly: “Poor Sonia Sotomayor, she can’t help it. She was born with a politically-predisposed left-wing foot in her mouth.”
Sotomayor, known for her clearly partisan public comments, including telling law students to organize in favor of (on-demand) abortion “rights” and in February criticizing the court’s 2024 presidential immunity case, on Thursday said in comments during a wide-ranging talk at the America Bar Association (ABA) TIPS 10th Annual Section Conference that lawyers across America should “fight this fight,” obviously meaning against President Donald Trump and his administration.
Sotomayor said, in part:
If you’re not used to fighting, and losing battles, then don’t become a lawyer. Our job is to stand up for people who can’t do it themselves.
And our job is to be the champion of lost causes. But right now, we can’t lose the battles we are facing. And we need trained and passionate and committed lawyers to fight this fight.
Wait. “We?” Who’s we, Justice Sotomayor?
Last time I checked, Lady Justice wears a mask over her eyes to suggest that justice is (supposed to be) blind.
Apparently, Sotomayor — along with the various federal district judges who aggressively (and unconstitutionally) attempted to derail Trump’s agenda — missed the “justice is blind” thingy in law school.

George Washington Law School professor and political commentator Jonathan Turley shared his thoughts on Sotomayor’s latest controversial comments in a Sunday column.
“Her comments … appeared to veer into … partisan territory regarding the current challenges against the Trump Administration. She declared, “Right now, we can’t lose the battles we are facing.”
The “we” left many surprised and concerned that the jurist was rallying the left as a type of constituency. She declared “We need trained and passionate and committed lawyers to fight this fight. For me, being here with you is an act of solidarity.”
Clearly, such comments are subject to different interpretations. Newspapers like the New York Times made the obvious connection, stating that it was made “against the backdrop of immense stress on lawyers and the legal system from the Trump administration.”
The message was not lost on activists who heralded “Justice Sotomayor’s support for the aggressive pro-democracy movement is so important at this critical time.” Court-sanctioned lawyer and Democratic activist Marc Elias added, “She understands that while we must bring difficult cases and be willing to lose, we must always fight to win. And by lending her voice in ‘solidarity,’ she affirmed that it is ‘our time to stand up and be heard.’”
Exactly — the latter — while the Times’ interpretation was clearly an attempt to cover Sotomayor’s real intent.
“[C]alls to ‘fight this fight’ in the current atmosphere were injudicious, ” Turley wrote.
Indeed they were. Could Sotomayor have been more clear, other than by referencing Trump by name?
