“This was a damage-only road traffic collision, so no injuries, and no arrests either. But an investigation is ongoing,” a spokesman for Thames Valley Police said yesterday.

In an update today, police stated: “No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.”

The incident drew a significant emergency response, with police cordoning off the area whilst repair work was undertaken.

Despite the dramatic nature of the crash, authorities confirmed there were no structural issues with the building.

A spokesman for Tesco said: “The petrol station at our Banbury Extra is currently closed. We are working hard with our maintenance team to reopen this as soon as possible. We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused.”

The Banbury Extra store itself remains open as usual, with shoppers still able to access the main supermarket facilities.

For motorists needing to refuel, the nearest alternative Tesco petrol station is at Brackley Superstore, located approximately 10 miles away from the Banbury Extra site.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service detailed their response to the incident, confirming they were called to the scene in the early afternoon on Wednesday.

“We were called on Wednesday at 2.03pm, sending fire engines from Banbury and Deddington fire stations, plus their rescue tender vehicle from Kidlington fire station, to Tesco Extra Petrol Station, Lockheed Close, Banbury,” a spokesman said.

The fire service explained that crews attended “a two-vehicle road traffic collision, with one vehicle going into the front of the petrol station”.

Emergency teams isolated the electricity supply and petrol pumps before making the vehicles safe and removing them from the building onto the forecourt.
